It's been a dull, rainy spring so far here in Port Chalmers but our magnolias have tried their best in the crappy conditions. Despite their reputation for difficulty, they've been superstars in our garden. Invest in some today. You won't regret it.
 Michaelia Doltsopa: slightly munted by the rain and wind but a perfumed paradise, as always. Elegant elongate leaves all year round. Probably my favourite flowering tree, hands down. |  Magnolia x Shirazz. A modest, architectural tree that always blooms profusely for us, even in garbage soil and half shade. Not hugely fragrant, but a lovely performer. |
Magnolia stellata. Another good variety for half shade and indifferent conditions. The soil here is dry clay and there is a lot of competition with surrounding trees, but this little variety always brings it with the flowers.
 Magnolia x Black Tulip. A busy, fleshy little tree about 3m here and denser than most in habit. Lime green leaves, excellent performance in shade. Flowers out of season for us, often having one or two blooms all year round. |  Magnolia x ?? Never had the right label on this one but it's some kind of soulangeana hybrid. Sparse in quite deep shade but flowers reliably none the less. |
Magonlia x 'Susan'. I bought this as a sad little stick on special because of the name (Susan is one of my faves from the book) and it has rewarded that impulse handsomely. A small cultivar with a reliable crop of upward facing, resilient pinky-mauve blooms.
