We really love this reliable little variety and recommend it for the lo-fi and/or lazy garden.I can't remember where we picked this plant up exactly but it would have been on special somewhere at a local nursery since who can afford to pay retail for rhododendrons these days? They're getting up around the $50 mark here in NZ, even for small grades of common varieties. Ours lives in what's become deep and pretty dry shade under a maple and the Wisteria tree, spending half its life covered in various pest vines like convolvulus and receiving a few litres from the hose only when everything around it is looking crispy too. But it flowers like this in the middle of winter every year without fail. I think there's even a slight scent. The soil in this area is only just acidic enough for most rhododendrons and another a few feet away is perpetually yellow- but not Christmas Elf. The blooms start lolly pink and fade to white. Plant one today. |
